The Big Picture

What is Science Olympiad?

Science Olympiad is the nation's premier team-based science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competition. Founded in 1984, it now reaches more than 7,000 teams across all 50 states, turning classroom science into a spectator sport.

Each team of up to 15 students competes in a rotation of 23 events spanning the full range of the sciences — life science, earth & space science, physical science, chemistry, technology, and engineering. Events fall into three broad styles:

  • Study events — students master a body of knowledge and take a written test, in events like Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Dynamic Planet, and Rocks and Minerals.
  • Lab events — students perform experiments and analyze data during the competition, in events like Chemistry Lab, Forensics, Circuit Lab, and Thermodynamics.
  • Build events — students design, build, and test devices ahead of time and run them at the tournament, in events like Boomilever, Electric Vehicle, Wright Stuff, and Scrambler.

Teams advance through Regional, State, and National tournaments. Along the way students build deep content knowledge, engineering skill, and the collaboration and time-management habits that carry into college and careers.

Why students love it

  • Find your niche — from anatomy to aerodynamics, there's an event for every interest.
  • Work as a team toward a shared medal count.
  • Build real devices and run real experiments.
  • Travel to tournaments and meet students from across the state.
  • Strengthen college applications and STEM readiness.

Our Mascot

Meet Jibby Jr

Jibby Jr, the pink alpaca mascot, dressed in a pinstripe tuxedo with a red bow tie and pink glasses

Jibby Jr joined CVSO in 2019. He has been to LISO, Battle at Valley Forge, DSM, Solon, MIT, SOUP, North Pocono, SOAPS, CPA, PASO, & Nationals!

He loves entertaining Division B teams at Eagle Invy and hanging out at the Eagle View and Cumberland Valley team home bases throughout the tournament season.

He is proud of the Cumberland Valley High School team for qualifying for Nationals four times, and of Eagle View Middle School for earning a National bid of its own. He's even prouder of his team for winning the 2022 Science Olympiad Spirit Award at Nationals.

Jibby Jr's favorite events are Astronomy, Forensics, and Experimental Design, but he has the most fun when he gets to wing it in a trial event such as Cybersecurity.
